How to choose leather boots for winter: a men's guide

Men's leather winter boots come down to five things: upper, lining, sole, height with lacing, and size. We go through each one using Babylon's Armor and Washington models.

In short

Choose men's winter boots by a genuine leather upper, a warm lining, a chunky sole with deep tread, a high laced silhouette and a size that leaves room for a warm sock. Babylon, a Ukrainian footwear maker with its own factory in Kharkiv, makes such boots by hand: Armor comes with a choice of Respira leather or Winterfrost 500 insulation (rated +5 to −15 °C), and Washington has a fur-lined insulated version.

How to choose men's winter boots: what to check on the product page?

Check five things: what the upper is made of, what the lining is and what temperature it is rated for, what the sole is like, how high the boot is and how it holds your foot, and the size table. A good product page states all of this — if something is missing, ask the seller before you buy.

We have already covered the general rules for winter footwear — temperature, insulation, soles — in "How to choose winter shoes". This article is only about men's leather boots, using two Babylon lines as examples: Armor and Washington. Both are made by hand at Babylon's own factory in Kharkiv, Ukraine, where the brand has been making footwear since 1997.

A quick checklist:

  1. Upper — genuine leather.
  2. Lining — warm or breathable, with a stated temperature range.
  3. Sole — chunky, with deep tread.
  4. Height and lacing — covered ankle and a secure fit.
  5. Size — room for a warm sock, based on the size table of that model.

Why choose a genuine leather upper for winter boots?

Genuine leather lasts, holds its shape and breathes, so your feet sweat less indoors. That matters in winter: moisture inside the boot chills your foot faster than the frost outside.

Every model in this article has a genuine leather upper — it says so in the "Upper" line on each product page. The Armor pages note that genuine leather wears well; the Washington pages describe a durable upper with a clean, elegant look. For how to tell real leather from faux leather and why it matters in shoes, see "Genuine leather or faux leather".

A leather upper needs some care: a water-repellent treatment before the first snow and cream to keep the leather from drying out. More on that below.

Which lining: Respira leather, Winterfrost 500 or fur?

The lining decides how warm the boots will be. For frost, choose an insulated version — Winterfrost 500 in Armor (rated +5 to −15 °C on the product page) or the fur-lined version of Washington. Uninsulated Respira leather suits mild winters, autumn and people who drive more than they walk.

Armor boots come with two lining options listed on the product page; you pick one when ordering.

How to read the table. A temperature rating is the manufacturer's estimate for normal walking around town. If you spend long periods standing outside — at a bus stop, on a work site, at a playground — choose an insulated version even for moderate frost and add a warm sock. The NHS lists thick socks and boots among the ways to prevent frostbite; each works better with the other.

If you can't decide between Respira and Winterfrost 500, think about how long you spend outdoors on foot on a winter day. Five minutes from the car to the office — a breathable leather lining is enough. Half an hour or more outside, especially in slush — go for the insulation, which, according to the product page, also keeps water and snow out.

What sole do men's winter boots need?

A chunky sole with deep tread and enough height: it grips on snow, keeps your feet away from the cold pavement and lasts longer. Protection for the base of the boot against water and road salt is a bonus.

  • Tread. Armor has a chunky deep-tread sole that, per the product page, "grips confidently on winter surfaces". Washington has a high treaded sole that keeps the cold of the ground away and grips well on slippery surfaces.
  • Protective coating. All Armor boots have liquid rubber applied around the base of the sole using Babylon's own technique. It guards against water, dirt and scuffs — exactly where snow and salt hit hardest.
  • Insole. Washington has a soft insole of leather-covered foam rubber that moulds to your foot.

For sole materials such as EVA and TPR, see our general guide to winter shoes.

What height and lacing work best in winter?

In winter, go for boots that cover the ankle and lace all the way up the instep: less snow gets in and your foot doesn't slide inside. Lacing lets you adjust the boot to your foot and the thickness of your sock.

Both Babylon lines are lace-up boots (you can see it in the product photos). Armor has a high silhouette, and its page highlights a secure fit: "your foot stays locked in, even on slippery ground". Washington is an everyday boot with Italian metal hardware.

When trying a pair on, lace it fully and walk around. Your heel should not lift and your toes should not touch the end. If you have to pull the laces painfully tight to stop your foot sliding, the size is too big.

Armor or Washington: which Babylon boot to choose?

Armor is for people who walk a lot and want maximum protection at the base plus insulation with a stated rating. Washington is for the city and everyday wear, when a clean look and a breathable leather lining matter most.

What size winter boots should you buy for a warm sock?

Not "a size up" but by foot length: measure your foot in the evening, wearing the sock you will wear with the boots, and compare it with the size table on that model's product page. Leave a little room at the toe so your toes don't touch the end.

Babylon makes almost every model on its own last, so the size table on the product page is what counts. On the Armor-24 page, for example, size 42 corresponds to a foot length of 27.3 cm — for any other model, use its own table. Step-by-step instructions are in "How to measure your foot at home", and general advice is on the size guide page.

How to care for leather boots in winter?

Treat a new pair with a water-repellent product before the first snow, wipe off dirt and salt with a damp cloth after walks, and let wet boots dry naturally — not on a radiator or with a hairdryer. That is what the Armor and Washington care notes recommend.

  • Leather. Apply leather cream or lotion regularly so it doesn't dry out and crack.
  • Armor rubber coating. Just wipe it with a damp cloth.
  • Drying. Away from direct sunlight and heat sources, or the leather may lose its shape.

FAQ

Which men's boots are warmest for winter?

Warmth comes mainly from the lining, not the upper. Babylon's Armor boots can be ordered with Winterfrost 500 insulation, which the product page rates from +5 to −15 °C. The Washington models have a fur-lined insulated version that, according to the description, stays comfortable below 0 °C.

What is a Respira lining?

Respira is a breathable Italian leather used for linings. According to Babylon's product pages, it lets air through and won't rub, even on long days. It is the standard lining in the Washington boots, and in Armor you can choose it instead of Winterfrost 500 — a good fit for mild winters, autumn and driving.

What is the rubber coating around the sole for?

The base of a boot is the first thing to meet snow, puddles and road salt. On Armor boots, liquid rubber is applied around the base of the sole using Babylon's own technique; the product page says it guards against water, dirt and scuffs. Care is simple: just wipe it with a damp cloth.

Should I buy winter boots a size up?

Not blindly. Measure your foot in the evening, wearing the warm sock you will wear with the boots, and compare the length with the size table on the product page of the exact model. Babylon makes almost every model on its own last, so size tables can differ between models. Returns and exchanges are accepted within 30 days.

How is Armor different from Washington?

Armor is a tough cold-weather boot with a chunky deep-tread sole and rubber protection at the base, with a choice of Respira or Winterfrost 500 lining. Washington is an everyday boot with a clean look, Italian metal hardware, a Respira lining, a soft leather-covered insole and a high treaded sole.
