Platform soles on sheepskin boots: choosing height, sole and size
A platform lifts your foot above cold pavement and slush, but it adds weight and needs care on ice. Here is how to choose the height, sole, upper and size, using Babylon women's boots as examples.

In short
Platform sheepskin boots are warmer than flat ones because the thick sole keeps your foot away from frozen ground, and they add a few centimetres of height. Choose a moderate platform, a light EVA or TPE sole with deep tread, a double-face sheepskin upper and the size from the model's own chart. Babylon, a Ukrainian brand, handmakes such boots at its family-owned factory in Kharkiv: Frost-74, UG-1-41, UG-1-44.
What are platform sheepskin boots, and who are they for?
Platform sheepskin boots are winter boots made of sheepskin or leather with fur inside, set on a thick, flat sole instead of a thin one. The platform lifts your foot above cold pavement and puddles, adds a few centimetres of height and gives a more modern silhouette. They suit anyone who walks a lot around town in winter and wants to be warmer and a little taller than in classic flat boots.
Compared with chunky-soled leather boots, the construction is different: the upper and the warmth come as one piece, the fur runs through the whole boot, and the fit is softer and roomier. Compared with flat sheepskin boots, the sole has real height and tread and keeps your foot clearly off the ground.

Babylon handmakes women's platform sheepskin boots at its family-owned factory in Kharkiv, Ukraine, in business since 1997, on its own last for almost every model. We will use them as examples below.
What are the pros and cons of a platform in winter?
The main advantage is warmth: a thick sole is an extra layer between your foot and frozen ground. The second is height and a bolder silhouette. The trade-offs are more weight, less flex and a higher cost of mistakes on ice if the sole is smooth or too tall.
| Pros | Cons |
|---|---|
| Foot further from cold pavement, so it stays warmer | Heavier if the sole is solid rubber |
| Upper stays above water in shallow puddles and slush | A thick sole flexes less, so the step feels stiffer |
| A few extra centimetres without a heel | The higher the sole, the easier it is to twist an ankle |
| A modern, chunky look that suits bulky outerwear | On ice, tread matters more than height |
The Frost-74 product page puts it plainly: the boots do not let the cold through because the insole is fur-covered and the sole height keeps you off the cold ground. The page rates this model from +5 to −20 °C.
On stability: as far back as the 1970s, American podiatrists warned that high platforms raise the risk of falls and sprains, because a raised ankle is less stable. A boot shaft partly makes up for this by holding the leg. The NHS advice on preventing falls recommends shoes that fit well, do not slip off and have a good grip.
What platform height should you choose?
For everyday walking in town, a moderate platform of about 3–4 cm is the most versatile. It already adds warmth and height, but does not get in the way of walking or driving. Save high platforms of 5 cm and more for dry streets and outfits, not for icy pavements.
- Moderate, about 3–4 cm. A good balance of warmth, weight and stability. Frost-74, for example, lists a sole height (inside) of 3.5 cm, and its page notes it is comfortable both behind the wheel and on a walk around town.
- High, 5 cm and more. A bolder look and more height, but a heavier pair that needs care on ice.
- Check the rocker. A good platform has a slightly raised toe, so your step rolls forward instead of slapping down.
Not every product page gives the height. If it is missing, look at the side-view photo and ask the store before ordering.

What sole material and tread do you need?
Look for a light EVA or TPE sole with deep tread. EVA is a foamed polymer that is light and cushions each step. TPE (thermoplastic elastomer) is denser, rubber-like and stays flexible. A smooth sole with no pattern is wrong for snow at any height.
- EVA. Light and springy, softens the impact on pavement. The Frost-74 sole is EVA.
- TPE. Holds its shape and stays flexible in the cold, good for wet snow.
- Lightweight sole, material not specified. For UG-1-41 and UG-1-44, the page simply lists a lightweight sole.
- Tread. Deeper grooves and a wider base mean more confidence on snow. Check the sole pattern in the product photos.
A sole that sticks out slightly beyond the upper adds stability. A narrow platform under a wide shaft is a poor choice for winter.
Upper and lining: double-face sheepskin, leather or suede?
Natural double-face sheepskin holds heat best: hide and fur in one layer, with no lining in between. A leather upper with fur inside holds its shape better. Suede is softer and looks great, but needs more care in slush.
- Double-face sheepskin. UG-1-41 and UG-1-44 are made this way, with thick, dense fur inside.
- Double-face genuine leather (sheepskin). The Frost-74 upper, with a genuine leather heel counter and tongue insert, sheepskin fur inside and a fur-covered insole.
- Natural nubuck with natural fur. For example, the MARY-94 slip-ons in the women's sheepskin boots section.
Check the composition line on the product page to see what is inside: sheepskin, fur on a lining or faux fur. How to tell real sheepskin by touch and by the cut edge is covered in our article on genuine sheepskin boots.
Short or tall platform boots?
Short platform boots are lighter, easier to wear with jeans and trousers, and comfortable in the car or on public transport. Taller ones cover the ankle, hold the foot better on a chunky sole and stay warmer in hard frost. Short for slushy city days, taller for frost and long walks.
- Short. UG-1-41 (black) and UG-1-44 (brown) have a low silhouette with braided laces and a fur trim at the top.
- Taller, lace-up. Frost-74 is a higher lace-up model that secures the ankle, which helps a lot on a platform.

Laces on platform boots are not just decoration. They let you adjust the fit for a thicker sock and keep your heel from slipping with every step.
How do you get the size right?
Measure your foot in the evening, wearing the socks you will wear with the boots, and compare the length with the size chart on that model's product page. Almost every Babylon model is made on its own last, so charts can differ: do not carry your size over from one model to another.
Step-by-step instructions are in our guide on how to measure your foot. Sheepskin boots fit loosely, but on a platform the heel must not slip: a stiff, thick sole does not bend with the foot, and a pair that is too big will rub. If you are between two sizes, compare both with the model's chart rather than sizing up at random. General advice is on the size guide page.
What to wear with platform sheepskin boots?
A platform makes footwear look heavier, so it balances puffer jackets, fur coats and wide-leg trousers. With leggings or skinny jeans you get a contrast between a chunky base and a slim leg. Black platform boots are the most versatile; brown ones work with beige, denim and knitwear.

FAQ
Are platform sheepskin boots warmer than flat ones?
Usually, yes, if the upper and lining are the same. A thick sole is an extra layer between your foot and cold pavement. The Babylon Frost-74 product page says it directly: the insole is fur-covered and the sole height keeps you off the cold ground. That model is rated from +5 to −20 °C.
Are high platform boots heavy?
Weight depends on the sole material more than its height. Foamed EVA is light and springy, while solid rubber is noticeably heavier. Babylon Frost-74 has an EVA sole, and UG-1-41 and UG-1-44 have a lightweight sole. Before you decide, walk around in the pair for at least a few minutes to feel the weight.
Is it safe to walk on ice in platform boots?
On ice, tread and sole width matter most. A platform with a deep pattern and a wide base grips better than a narrow or smooth one. A very high sole raises the ankle and makes it easier to twist, so for icy days choose a moderate height and lace-up boots that hold the foot securely.
Which platform boots suit petite women?
A platform adds a few centimetres and visually lengthens the leg, especially when the boots match your trousers or tights. Shorter boots usually work better on a petite frame, because a tall shaft on a chunky sole can cut the silhouette. Black UG-1-41 with leggings or black jeans is an easy example.
Should I size up in platform sheepskin boots?
Not by default. Measure your foot in the evening, wearing the socks you will wear with the boots, and compare the length with the size chart on that model's product page. Almost every Babylon model is made on its own last, so charts can differ between models. Your heel should not slip out.
How do I care for platform sheepskin boots?
Treat the upper as you would any sheepskin boots: a protective spray before the first wear, a dry brush and drying away from radiators. After a walk, wipe salt and grit off the sole with a damp cloth, especially from the tread grooves. Our article on caring for sheepskin boots covers the full routine step by step.
